It seems that my boat's HIN number was screwed up at some point - most numbers match but two are wrong - on the title, documentation, bill of sale, eveywhere on documents used to buy and sell the past two times, at least.

NJ State requires a rub of the VIN in order to title and register and this is how this came to light.

DMV told me to go fix it - they will give me title and registration once I can produce Documentation (I documented her) withthe correct number...

Anyone ever go through this?

Never had that problem! Sounds like a whole lot of trouble to me.

Not sure if it makes a lot of difference, but the error is in the "Month/Year" rather than the Make/Serial Number..., i.e. ABC12345 is ok but then the last four digits for month/year shows 1275 (December '75) instead of 0175 for January '75.

I do hope this will let me have it re-Documented...

Paulus,
I had that issue. Believe it or not, I was allowed to print up a dog tag at the pet store with the HIN on it and screw it to the hull, so that the original was still visible but adjacent. Give it a whirl, hope it works.

Edited to say nevermind, I now see you are talking about something else...

It was CA, but I was off the mark on my original read of his dilemma. My problem stemmed from a coat of paint that made the imprinted HIN not legible...

I cannot confirm or deny or recall that I ever got creative with a pencil and a tracing.

I recently purchased my latest vessel and through the survey I was showed that there is a second location for the HIN. Mine was located in the forward head behind a drawer under the sink, it was embedded in the fiberglass hull as a label with clear epoxy over the top of it so it could not be removed. I will se if I can attach the photo. Anyway it was a valid source to have the vessel documented

If you're using windows, right click the file name of the pic, choose "Open With" and open it with MS photo editor, resize it with that, save it under another name and then upload it.

Hope that helps
