Seems like a silly question. My Mother was the 2nd female licensed master in Alaska, my Sister was the 3rd, my Wife was the first female Bering Sea crab / longline captain and licensed Master, all three are excellent at steering, and have numerous Pacific crossings between HI and AK, as the Master of the vessel. I would put them up against any male counterpart. I have supreme trust in their abilities.

Yes, Margie generally operates the boat when we are in and around the docks. 1) She is an excellent helmsperson and 2) I have more upper body strength on the rare occasion we need to fend off.

Interesting that everyone here says their women steer.... But in action, I.e. on the water, at sea, in the ICW, on the bay, ocean, pond in row boats, I ONLY ever see men at the helm with some very few exceptions, like those few motor boaters I mentioned in my original post.

May be everyone switches when they pass me?

So the next bit of the question: Do the boats you pass, in the vast majority, have males at the wheel and the female not at the wheel?

Yes I know there's exceptions, but I am talking the generality, the vast generality.

:)

Kelly doesn't like close quarters stuff, but that is more a function of visibility than skill. She loves driving at all other times and also has the skills to set the vane right.

It might be a matter of where you are doing the observing...........

I have just returned from a little 5 day jaunt out of the Rio Dulce and into Belize to renew my visa and accompany friends on their boat as they updated their boat’s paper work.

Ellen is captain of her catamaran and she runs the boat (you should see the nifty “Master and Commander” zarpes Belize issues) while my wife, Trish, helps with the navigation and steering. Usually Ellen’s husband and I do absolutely nothing except take care of anchoring chores, although on occasion we might help with a tack.

I guess I am lucky to still be alive. I didn’t know that women don’t know how to steer.
